Why is ABA Therapy One-on-One?

The Power of Individualized Attention

One of the most important factors in the success of ABA therapy is how it’s delivered. For children with autism, the difference between group-based care and one-on-one treatment can be life-changing. At Little Leaves, we provide individualized, center-based ABA therapy with a consistent 1:1 therapist-to-child ratio, because children make the most progress when they are truly seen, supported, and understood.

In many early learning environments—like preschools or daycares—children receive group-based care, even if their needs are complex. For autistic children, this can lead to many missed opportunities for growth. By contrast, ABA therapy delivered one-on-one by a credentialed professional (i.e., RBT) ensures that every moment becomes an opportunity to learn, practice, and build meaningful skills.

“1:1 individualized instruction is critical to closing the developmental gaps for young autistic children. This approach allows the therapist to focus on the child’s needs and use individualized teaching procedures to promote language and adaptive skills.” – Little Leaves Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Ivy Chong.

Why 1:1 Care Matters in ABA Therapy

The purpose of ABA therapy is to break down complex skills—like language, social interaction, and self-care—into manageable steps that children can learn and apply. This process requires continuous monitoring, coaching, and adaptation, which is only possible through individualized support.

With a dedicated Behavior Technician working directly with each child throughout their therapy day, we’re able to adjust in real time. If a child is struggling with transitions, we can slow down. If they’re showing progress in a skill, we can move forward. That level of responsiveness simply isn’t possible in a group model.

“1:1 therapy is intensive and addresses a child’s specific needs in the moment, which results in faster progress. In this way, reinforcement strategies can be personalized to the child’s preferences and needs.” – Dr. Chong.

Measurable Progress Starts with Consistency

At Little Leaves, our 1:1 approach ensures that each child’s therapy is consistent, data-informed, and tailored to their unique goals. Our clinicians collect data throughout the day and work closely with supervising BCBAs to review progress and adjust plans. This team-based model gives families visibility into their child’s growth—and the confidence that therapy is always moving forward.

For families searching how to find an ABA provider, it’s important to ask about staff ratios, daily structure, and how progress is measured. These elements all affect how much support your child receives and how effective therapy will be over time.

Building Trust Through Relationships

One-on-one care isn’t just about structure—it’s also about connection. Children develop trusting relationships with their therapists, which makes it easier to build new skills and navigate challenges. That connection lays the foundation for real, lasting progress.
